The Aloha State! (Newspaper Entry)

Volcano eruption:

In the beginning of May, 2018, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake sent tremors across the big island in Hawaii. More than 1,500 people were evacuated after the Kilauea volcano exploded, sending lava all over the island. The lava is wreaking havoc all over the island and has destroyed many homes, road, and even two geothermal plants! Most recently, the volcanoes have trapped three people in their shelter without water and adequate survival needs. Not only that, but it has completely evaporated lakes in Hawaii, with the risk of it going into the ocean. It has left a big impact on both the physical beauty of Hawaii, it also damages Hawaii’s economy. The cost to repair all the damaged roads and houses skyrocketed due to all the damage done. The tourism in Hawaii also decreased by 90% in the past few months, which is also a big impact on the economy in Hawaii. Hawaii needs all the help it needs to combat this situation, and hopes that the eruptions and quakes will stop sooner or later.
Floods:
In April, 2018, heavy rain and thunderstorms caused a massive flood in Hawaii. Hundreds have been evacuated. Power and water sources have been shut off. Massive mudslides have occurred, and sources say that more than 822 mm of rainfall has happened in a short period of 48 hours. CNN meteorologist Pedram Javaheri said. "That amount of rainfall would climatologically take nearly 18 months to fall in London and over 24 months to fall in Los Angeles." Fortunately, emergency rescue operations have rescued a lot of people by helicopter and other means of transportation. Landslides have been blocking the major roads and people are trapped in their cars or homes. Luckily, many of the residents were more than willing to clean their neighborhoods to restore it back to the same as before.
Case of the Keaholas:
The Keaholas are a married pair that have been condemned for multiple cases of corruption and other sorts of criminal offenses. They have been arrested last year, but they have pleaded not guilty. In a report, it showed that the wife, copied government records as an excuse to acquire a house. The wife has been accused of corruption because of her forgeries of legal papers. Their uncle have also been brought in due to the bad blood between the wife and him. Both the Kealohas were accused of about 20 counts, including charges that include lying to federal agents, conspiracy to obstruct, identity theft and fraud. Four other current or former Hawaii police officers have been brought in the case too. All of them have plead “not guilty.”
